About R. Nelson Nash

R. Nelson Nash was the discoverer and developer of the Infinite Banking Concept™ and the author of Becoming Your Own Banker. His work taught individuals, families, and business owners to think differently about money by focusing on control of the banking function through properly structured, dividend-paying whole life insurance.

Nash was born in Greene County, Georgia, in 1931 and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1952 with a B.S. in Forestry. He served in the U.S. Air Force, later joined the North Carolina Army National Guard as a fixed-wing pilot, and earned Master Aviator Wings during thirty years of military service. Before entering the life insurance business, he worked as a forestry consultant. He later spent more than 35 years as a life insurance agent, working with The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States and Guardian. He became a Chartered Life Underwriter, was inducted into Equitable’s Hall of Fame, and became a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table.

In 2000, Nash published Becoming Your Own Banker, the book that became the foundation for the Infinite Banking Concept. He also authored Building Your Warehouse of Wealth and co-authored The Case for IBC. He traveled throughout the United States and Canada teaching IBC and served as the founding director of the Nelson Nash Institute.

Those who knew Nash described him as a consistent Christian whose biblical convictions shaped both his life and his approach to money. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Birmingham, where he served as a choir member and frequent vocal soloist.

Nash was also deeply influenced by Austrian economics and the work of the Foundation for Economic Education. Leonard E. Read, FEE’s founder, became Nash’s mentor, and in 2018 FEE presented Nash with its Blinking Lights Award for his lifetime of work promoting liberty, free markets, sound money, and Austrian economics.

R. Nelson Nash passed away on March 27, 2019, at the age of 88. His work continues through his books, the Nelson Nash Institute, and the practitioners who teach the Infinite Banking Concept today.
